If you are traveling by car, you should ideally park in the visitor parking lot of the military airport in Unterbach. If you are traveling by public transport, you can take the bus from Meiringen to Unterbach. Then get off in the center of the village.

From the visitor parking lot of the military airport, we walk in the direction of the Oltschibach Falls. Ghoethe is said to have passed by here on his tour of Switzerland back then. Standing in front of the fall, turn left onto the hiking trail in the direction of the fence. A sign informs that the path is closed due to a rock fall, but that it can be walked on with good shoes at your own risk. We tried it and can say that it goes well - but is not suitable for strollers.

Even the short way to the waterfall is quite magical. From the waterfall it starts directly quite steeply. You always have a great view of the Hasliberg opposite. After about 10 minutes comes the place with the rockfall (see pictures).

Rockfall site

After the ascent you will reach a mountain meadow and it is not immediately obvious where the hiking trail continues - But don't worry, it continues. Go directly to the houses, then you will also come across the hiking trail sign again. When you reach the road, take the opportunity to let your eyes wander. There is also a bench here that invites you to take a break. You are now in Zaun.

From here it goes down the mountain again. You walk for a short distance along the road, past beautiful old mountain farmhouses and huts until a signpost leads the trail away to the left. Now you enter a great forest that provides shade even on hot days. When you reach the valley floor again, you are in Balm. You will see the old schoolhouse directly opposite. Keep left and walk back to Unterbach. Take the opportunity here to buy alpine cheese directly from the farm at the various farmers.

We hope you enjoy the trip as much as we did.
